All non-profit organizations begin with a dream and a desire to make a difference in the community.
All non-profit organizations that succeed do so because of generous and hard working volunteers.
In June 2003, a group of Gibsons and district residents met with the goal of starting a Public Art Gallery.
The owners of Gibsons Quay generously supported the proposal and the gallery space was made available. Gibsons Town Council was unanimous in its support and a start-up grant of $1,000 was awarded. Volunteers donated materials and time, Gibsons Building Supplies donated track lighting, and the space was transformed with secured entries and a security alarm system.
The Gallery applied for and received BC Society Act status as a Non-Profit Society, and also Federal Charitable Tax status, to enable the Gallery to issue income tax receipts.
More than 250 founding memberships ($10. each) were sold.
The Gibsons Public Art Gallery was incorporated on August 21st, 2003. Its first exhibition, an Invitational, opened September 26th 2003.
In the Spring of 2004 the Board of Directors engaged a Curator from the Emily Carr College of Art and Design to train and mentor volunteers in curatorial practices and the management of a public gallery. This valuable professional relationship is ongoing.
All of the Gallery's operations are managed and carried out by volunteers. |
